AbstractThe results of a two-dimensional photoelastic investigation of the stress distribution in short columns subject to axial load are presented in this thesis. The effects upon the stress distribution produced by varying the proportions of the member, the depth of bearing plates, and the condition of the loaded ends (i.e. whether bonded or not), were studied. Details of model preparations, test techniques, and instrumentation are described. Comparisons of results are made with those of recent investigators in this field who have been concerned with concrete specimens in compression. The stress distributions reported here are in reasonable agreement with the results of Rowe and Zielinski and possibly Baker, but show considerable discrepancies with those of Sithichaikasem.
