AbstractThis thesis presents a study of speed limits as applied outside built-up areas in Thailand. In Chapters I and II an analysis of traffic problems is given with regard to circulation and safety. It is pointed out that road casualties are due in part to vehicle speed, thus necessitating speed control in order to improve safety on the roads. Chapter III deals with the desirability of speed limits. These can be established generally upon three distinct bases: (1) in relation to classification of vehicles; (2) in relation to place; and (3) considered as a necessary evil. In Chapter IV a mathematical study is presented which establishes the effect of imposed speed limits on the mean traffic speed, as well as the effect of the distribution of traffic by directions. The results are supported with field investigations. Chapter V presents the conclusions of these engineering and traffic investigations, showing that the speed limits imposed in Thailand are not suited to the physical and traffic conditions existing on the highways of the country.
