| Abstract | This study deals with the substitution of communication for transportation from the point of view of their usage. Some variables, which indicate the usage of transportation and communication, are identified. Historical data are used to calculate some index numbers for each of the variables at different time period in comparison to a base year. The growth in index number for each of the variables are assumed to be an indicator of the growth in usage of transportation and communication. A model has been developed to combine these index numbers into a composite index by taking the weighted average. The composite index, termed as usage index is then used to compare the growth in usage of transportation and communication so as to see if there is any substitution. |
