| Abstract | Over the years, considerable research has been conducted on the subject of formulating design criteria for Lagoons based chiefly on biological factors. In contrast, not much is yet known about the importance of incorporating climatic factors such as wind into Lagoon designs. Some studies indicate the important role played by wind in establishing the oxygen transfer across the surface of lakes and lagoons. An equation i s developed to estimate DO distribution in a lagoon which suggests that the geometry of the Lagoon also influences oxygen transfer rate. A practical method of estimating oxygen transfer coefficient KL from an average wind velocity (V) is delineated. It is also established that KL is directly proportional to v2 in the specified range of wind speeds. A rational design procedure of a facultative lagoon with respect to loading requirements has been outlined. An equation to predict the areal oxygen transfer obtainable from wind energy has been formulated and the usage of the same has been illustrated by giving values of expected increment in BOD loadings for different wind speeds. A typical design problem has been worked out which clearly demonstrates the effect of wind in reducing areal requirements and resulting larger depths. Importance of wind induced mixing has been established qualitatively and the improvement of COD removal efficiency by wind action has been clearly shown. |
