AbstractFor the prediction and optimization of the performance of dual media filter, a pilot plant study of single-medium filtration was carried out using anthracite and sand as filter media. Three different discrete water suspensions; natural turbid water, kaolin suspension and ferric oxide floe suspensions were used as sources in this study. With natural turbid water as source, the performance of tube settler was studied keeping the angle of inclination at 60 degrees. Investigations of the effect of loading rates on the settling efficiency revealed the fact that efficiency decreased with the increase of loading rate. Moreover filtration rate, size of suspension, filter grain size were found to affect the filtrate quality and head loss significantly. The theoretical analysis consisted of development of two discrete models relating specific deposit (Volume of deposit per unit volume of filter media) and filter coefficient. The experimental results obtained with ferric oxide floe suspension were analyzed using regression analysis for the calculation of filter parameters. It is evident that filtration rate and filter grain size are the main factors which influence the filter parameters. Furthermore the above parameters were used in projecting the performance of dual media filter. The break-even point phenomenon was used in the optimization of the relative thickness of the filter media.
