AbstractA complete stability analysis of the test embankment-excavation carried out to failure at the Asian Institute of Technology is presented in this thesis. The stability of the test section was investigated in terms of total and effective stresses using various methods of analysis with soil parameters determined from different test methods. A wide variation in the factors of safety is observed for different combinations of strength measurement, method of analysis and mode of failure. Pore pressures beneath the test section were predicted using all available methods at various embankment height, and these were compared with measured values. None of the methods of prediction was found to give satisfactory results. From the investigation, total stress analysis using Swedish method with field vane strength, together with a correction factor suggested by BJERRUM (1972), appeared to be most suitable for the design of an embankment on soft Rangsit Clay.
