AbstractThe purpose of this investigation was to verify that an equalization chart based on Gibson's theory can be applied to cylindrical piezometers. Laboratory and field response tests were conducted, and the results interpreted using the equalization chart. Deduced properties of the soil were compared with values abstained from oedometer tests. Study was made of the effect of consolidation pressure on the response of piezometer systems. An equivalent radius for cylindrical piezometers was sought to associate their properties with those of spherical piezometers. It was found that Premchitt's (1975) equalization chart, based on Gibson's theory for a spherical piezometer, is approximately applicable to cylindrical piezometers. Use of the radius of a cylindrical piezometer for the equivalent radius in the equitization chart led to good agreement between the deduced coefficients of consolidation and permeability and the values obtained from oedometer tests.
