AbstractA consolidation testing progrannne was established to investigate the one dimensional consolidation characteristics of Soft Porn Prachul Clay. An attempt was made to study the rate of compression due to sand drain installations in a sand drain model test, without success. It was found that there existed practically no surface crust at Porn Prachul site, but the clay is slightly over consolidated throughout its depth, and the compressibility stays quite constant with depth (17 m). However, a more relatively compressible zone was found at the depth of 10 ± 2 m. Correlations between compressibility and index properties were not significant. The compressibility in the horizontal direction is less than that in the vertical direction while the rate of horizontal compression is faster than that of vertical compression.
