AbstractThe problem of fresh water intrusion from a canal into a surrounding saline medium is investigated. The analytical description of this phenomenon is presented for a rectangular fresh water canal with impervious side walls, traversing an isotropic porous medium originally saturated with salt water. An equation describing the location of the salt water-fresh water interface and seepage from the canal is obtained for a given canal geometry and characteristics of the soil and fluids. Confirmation of the accuracy of the analytic analysis is obtained from experimental results using an electric analog model. Design curves are prepared giving the relationship between the geometry of the canal, properties of fluids and soil, depth of fresh water in the canal, depth of impervious side wall embedment and the geometry of the fresh water-salt water interface. The calculated results required to compile the data needed for the design curves were performed on an IBM 1620 digital computer.
