AbstractA half-scale model of a columnless staircase, comprising two flights and a landing and supported only on the upper and lower floors, was tested to investigate its behaviour under various arrangements of load. The model was designed by Siev's method and checked by Gould's method to take into account the displacements of the support. At various points, vertical or horizontal deflections were recorded and strains measured during the test. Curves of load/strain or load/deflection are plotted. The observed behaviour of the loaded staircase gives good agreement with the theory. The load factor for the first crack is about 1.6 times the total design load and that for the failure is about 4. The test results indicate that torsion should be given serious consideration in the design and every effort should also be made to reduce the amount of deflections.
