| Abstract | The beam method, which is much simpler than the analytical method, can be used to analyse cylindrical shell roofs if due cognizance is taken of its limitations. For this reason, it is desired to find the limits of applicability of the beam method for analyzing single shells without edge beams and interior barrels of multiple shells; a number of comparative analyses by the beam method and by the analytical method are made, and stress concentration factors are found. The limit of applicability curves and equations are established by assuming the beam method will be applicable if the stress concentration factors indicate not more than about 20 percent over- or understress. It is concluded that the beam method may be used with confidence for shells whose subtended half angle are less than Øk - (60*80r/1) (1.178 - 0.00178 r/t) for single shells without edge bbeams, and Øk - (65*40r/1) (1.115 - 0.00115 r/t) for interior barrels of multiple shells. |
