| Abstract | An investigation was made of the effect of solid concentration on
the fall velocity of a sphere settling in a sand-liquid mixture. Theoretical equations were derived to describe this phenomenon based on the assumption that the liquid-solid mixture produced a buoyant force on the
sphere equivalent to that which would exist in a homogeneous fluid having
the same specific weight as the liquid-solid mixture. An excellent
correlation was obtained between the theoretically predicted and experimentally determined values of the fall velocity in the sand-water slurry.
Experiments were conducted in a cylindrical tube made of clear plastic having an inside diameter of 5.10 cm. On the first set of experiments the fall velocity of the sphere was measured as it settled downward
in the liquid-solid mixture. The measured fall velocty was then compared to the theoretically predicted value. In the second set of
experiments sufficient sand was introduced into the test section so that
a sphere, which initially settled to the bottom of the container, rose
vertically upward because of its reduced buoyant weight. The rate of
ascent of this sphere was measured and compared to the theoretically
predicted value. |
