| Abstract | This study is concerned with the analysis of production sequencing problem of a toothpaste company. The system under study consists of a tube production and three toothpaste filling lines. The primary objective is to determine the interrelated paste and tube production schedules for minimizing the overall inventory cost for a planning horizon. The main difficulty encountered is the large number of possible sequences. The study begins with the examination of existing methods for the purpose of finding out whether any of them could be used in approaching the problem under study. It turns out that none of them can be uniquely applied. Five models are alternatively developed in this study. The first four models -- model 1,2,3 and 4 -- are heuristic in nature. Model 5 is a simulation model. Model 1 is exercised over a range of parameter values in order to obtain as much information as possible. Model 2 and Model 3 are the improvements of model 1. They give better results in all cases. Model 4 is formulated on the basis of the EMQ (economic manufacturing quantity) concept and of the insights gained through the analysis of model 1,2 and 3. The result of model 4 is compared with a sample schedule used by the company. Two planning horizons one month and two months -- are considered in each of these four models. Model 5 is developed for the purpose of searching out for the near optimal solution by a number of runs . |
