AbstractIn this study, an anlytical method was used to determine the surface resistance of a boundary roughened with cubical elements of nonuniform size and also of a boundary roughened with spherical segments of uniform size. The analysis, similar to ROBERSON’s (1961); is based upon the assumption that two types of shear stresses exist on the boundary, one being shear stress on the smooth boundary and the other being shear stress due to drag force on the roughness elements. The analytical solutions for the multiple cube size; two sizes; were compared with available experimental data by KOLOSEUS (1958) and solutions for the spherical segmental roughnesses were compared with that by SCHLICHTING (1936). In addition, the effect of size distribution of multiple cube size was considered in this study.
