AbstractCreep tests were conducted on one concrete mix. The test specimens were 2.85 in. diameter, 12 in. high unsealed cylinders and cruciform specimens with identical cross-sectional area and height; loaded at the age of 40 days with uniform compressive stresses of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40 and 50 percent of the 40-days compressive strength. Loads were sus¬ tained from 60 days up to 90 days. Time dependent deformations were measured during the entire test period. Shrinkages of unloaded specimens, stored in a controlled temperature environment with the test specimens, were measured during the entire test period. A mathematical expression for the time dependent stress-strain re¬ lationship of the cylinder is proposed, and may be used for the determina¬ tion of creep deflections in a reinforced concrete beam. The time-dependent stress-strain relationship derived for the cruci¬ form specimens reflects the effect of the surface area on the creep of plain concrete under axial compression.
