AbstractThe growing need for high quality material for road construction in Thailand is recognized. Lateritic soils which are found in much of the country may be used as a base course to good advantage and will result in a lower over-all cost. Such soils may be combined with bituminous material to produce treated base courses. This type of soil stabiliza¬ tion has never yet been undertaken in this region. The purpose has been to study the stabilization of lateritic material, mainly with cutback asphalt, to be used as a highway pavement base course. As a rule cohesive soils have satisfactory bearing capacity at low moisture content but lose strength when the moisture becomes high. By incorporating an asphaltic waterproofing agent with the soil, it is possible to maintain the low moisture condition thus developing an adequate load-carrying capacity in the material which can then be used as a base course for a pavement. Various bituminous binders can be used successfully but this research deals with only one bituminous material, a medium curing (MC-2) cutback asphalt. This binder was chosen because it can be readily mixed with lateritic soil.
