AbstractInvestigations were conducted to determine the depth of scour produced by a submerged two-dimensional vertical fluid jet impinging on a horizontal bed of cohesionless material. A model was formulated to describe the mechanics of the scour phenomenon based on the assumption that the cohesionless material behaves as a homogeneous fluid. Experimental results from tests with a jet of water impinging on a sand bed indicated that this model had only a limited range of application. Equations, defined in terms of empirically determined constants, were derived which described the cavity depth in terms of the hydraulic characteristics of the jet and the physical properties of the fluid and bed material. Test results using an air jet impinging on both sand and sawdust beds showed that the scour model which was used to describe the sand-water experiments does not apply for all combinations of fluid and cohesionless material. Additional laboratory tests are required using different combinations of fluid and cohesionless material to determine the conditions under which this scour model applies.
