| Abstract | Creep tests of singly reinforced concrete beams were conducted on six beams from one mix. The specimens were 3x6 in. in cross-section and 7 ft long. Sustained loads were applied at various span lengths to produce stress levels varying from 0.22 to 0.47 of the ultimate strength of 6 x 12 in. standard cylinders at the day of loading. The tests started at the age of 40 days and lasted for 2-3 months. The experimental curvatures, as well as the neutral axis depth, were compared with those obtained from cracked-section theory using the Shank time-dependent stress-strain relation. Theoretical curves were plotted by using two sets of Ei and n, one from the 1963 ACI Code, and the other obtained from the experimental data. The results show that the higher the stress levels the better the agreement between the experimental and the theoretical curves. Due to creep in the concrete the neutral axis depth, and curvature, increase. After 90 days under load the stress in the concrete decreases about 30 percent while the stress in the steel increases about 8 percent. |
