AbstractThis research is an initial attempt to determine the characteristics affecting the legibility of Thai character highway signs. The purpose has been to study the effects of the five selected variables: height, width, stroke width, character spacing, and line spacing, on the legi¬ bility distance. The technique comprised the designing of an experiment having reasonable limits on the selected variables and randomly selecting twenty combinations for observation by volunteer subjects. Coloured slides, having various degrees of magnification, were made of the twenty signboards. Volunteer subjects were asked to read the projected slides of the signs whilst under a simulated driving condition. The net scale effects (combining distance of initial photography, projection distance, and reading distance) were selected to produce the desired effect of varying the apparent reading distances. The results of the observations were analysed by statistical techniques to find the effects of the various combinations of the five variables upon the legibility distances.
