AbstractA differential equation for arches involving the relationship b tween the tangential deflection and the external load is derived. The external load is limited to a distributed load on the arch. This equation is applied to the case of a circular arch subjected to a uniform load on a horizontal projection. An exact solution as well as a numerical solution to this problem is presented. The finite difference method is used for the numerical solution, A detailed method of analysis for the bowstring arch or tied arch is described. Such analysis is effected by the application of the finite difference theory. The equations derived by POPOV and HIRSCH (1955) are expressed in finite difference form in terms of the unknown displacements and the unknown internal forces. Sufficient equations are formulated for the number of unknowns and these are solved simultaneously using an IBM 1620 computer. The solution of a numerical problem is given to illustrate the procedure. Results of this method are compared to the theoretical and experimental results from the studies conducted by CHANDRANGSU (1953). A proposal is made to enhance the efficiency of this approximate method.
