AbstractAn investigation is made of an artificial recharge technique which can be used to reclaim a porous medium saturated with salt water. A fresh water wedge is used to displace the salt water which originally saturates the porous media. The fresh water is supplied by a rectangular canal having impervious sidewalls which extend below the canal bottom. The water enters the porous media through the bed of the canal. The saline water originally present in the aquifer is assumed to be at rest. A mathematical analysis is presented which described the seepage rate from the canal and geometry of the interface separating the fresh water wedge from the surrounding saline media. Theoretical equations were then derived for the seepage rate, length of sheetpile, and liquid interface as functions of the canal geometry, fluid densities, permeability of the medium, and fresh water head. As a check on the theory, several electric analog model experiments were conducted. Results showed an excellent agreement with the theoretically obtained values.
