AbstractThis paper deals with the flow duration curves and stream flow variability index of the Chao Phya River Basin for two different observed periods, 1905-56 and 1952-63. Stream flow variability indices, non-dimensional ratios which reflect the slope of the flow duration curves, were determined and the factors that affect the indices were examined. It is a common deficiency in Southeast Asia that the stream flow records, if not available, are of relatively short periods. To overcome this deficiency, correlation analysis between short-term and longterm records were set up, from which the flow relationships were established. Using the flow duration curves of long-term records as an argument, the flow duration curves of short-term records were extended to a longer period and the stream flow variability index of the extended period was re-examined.
