AbstractThis thesis concerns a study of subsurface soundings conducted on saturated Bangkok clay. The objective was to find empirical equations for estimating the shear strength and natural water content of the clay in situ. A static cone-penetration apparatus of the encased soundingrod type, designed by the author, was employed using two types of measuring cone: (a) a cone having a 30-degree angle and a projected base area of 7.0 cm2, to an elevation about 5 meters below the ground surface, (b) a cone having a 60-degree angle and a projected base area of 10.0 cm2 (Dutch type), to an elevation about 10 meters below the ground surface. The point resistance values of the two cones were correlated with corresponding values of the undisturbed unconfined compressive strength and natural water content by the method of least squares. The goodness of fit was evaluated by the coefficient of correlation for each case. It was found that the correlation between point resistance and unconfined compressive strength is good whilst that between point resistance and natural water content is poor.
