| Abstract | An investigation has been made on the flexural behavior of laminated beams of Teng lumber glued with resorcinol glue. From the shear strength-gluing pressure curve of the standard block-shear tests, a gluing pressure of 200 psi was selected for the fabrication of the beams. Six beams, each consisting of eleven in. laminations, 4 in. wide and 11 ft long were fabricated and tested on a 10 ft simple span. Two loading conditions were applied to obtain bending failure or hori¬ zontal shear failure. The average modulus of rupture and shear strength of the laminated beams were found to be 677« and 597« of the solid wood value, respectively. Small specimens were cut from the unfractured parts of the large beams and tested to obtain mechanical properties. It was found that the properties compared quite favorably with commonly accepted values of solid Teng. It is concluded that resorcinol glue is strong enough to be used as an adhesive for the fabrication of glue-laminated beams. It is recommended that glue-laminated wood be used as structural elements for constructional purposes. |
