| Abstract | An experimental study was carried out in an effort to investigate the possible effects of strain gradient on the stress-strain relationship of concrete. A special testing technique was developed. A plain concrete block was subjected to an eccentric loading such that the strain gradient assigned to the block remained unchanged throughout the loading process. Five 6-in. x 4-in. x 12-in. specimens were tested to failure in this manner. The strain gradients adopted were: 0 (concentric), 0.000041, 0.000083, 0.000125, and 0.000167 radian per inch. Stressstrain curves were derived from experimental data using a numerical method. It was found that the stress-strain curves so obtained only differed within the degree of predictability of the concrete: no effect of strain gradient could be reported. |
