AbstractBeams, built-up by welding angular bars and round bars, were loaded to failure to investigate the application of plastic design methods to open-web steel beams. A total of ten latticed steel beams with different conditions of support and loading were designed, re-analyzed, fabricated, and tested. Plastic and working load design methods were compared for simplicity of analysis and economy of design. The anticipated ultimate loads were not attained because of unexpected local failures which caused collapse prior to the estimated ultimate loads. The chords at the points of failure showed signs of yielding but the buckling of the members prevented the redistribution of moment. The factors which primarily affected the beam behavior under load were: instability, residual stresses, and secondary stresses.
