| Abstract | This is an action-oriented research on the feasibility of the muban (village) organization for undertaking integrated rural development in Ban Thasawang, Surin. The research is based on a modification of the approach of the Thailand Rural Reconstruction Movement, Its four-fold program has been adapted to the felt needs of the target population. It is thought, however, that only solutions which start from the activation of the muban orggnizati6n1 and organized group actions in the personage of local leaders can free the traditional rural village from the vicious circle of poverty. The study comprises an analysis of the relationship. between the villagers and their identifiable leaders as to three aspects: mutual experiences in past rural development efforts; the villagers' conceptions of leadership within the sphere of patron-client relationship; and the villagers' selection of leaders for the implementation of a future development program. This approach is used as a means for identifying the actual leaders of the community forming the local leadership structure. Furthermore, the relationships between each identifiable leader and each socioeconomic status group are analyzed. The findings imply a considerable degree of feasibility for an effective muban organization in the personage of two local leaders, i.e. kamnan and abbot. It consequently results in suggestions for both activation of the existing muban organization and the organization of occupational groups as a precondition for self-reliant development. Suggestions are also given to the Girl Guides Association of Thailand for a feasible modus operandi if development efforts of this kind are to be launched in other villages. |
