| Abstract | An experimental investigation of the ultimate shear strength of beams reinforced with plain bars is presented. Tests were carried out on thirty simply supported concrete beams. All beams were rectangular in cross-section and subjected to two symmetrical concentrated loads. Three series of beams were tested: Series I, comprising 24 beams reinforced with plain bars with no web reinforcement; Series II, comprising 4 beams reinforced with deformed bars with no web reinforcement; and Series III, comprising 2 beams reinforced with plain bars with web reinforcement. The primary variables in this investigation were (1) the concrete strength, (2) the tensile reinforcement ratio, and (3) the shear span-to-depth ratio. An equation similar in form to the ACI 318-63 recommendations was derived from the diagonal cracking load of beams in Series I. The effect of the deformation of locally manufactured deformed bars and the effect of web reinforcement were checked using the new equation. |
