| Abstract | Daily composited waste samples from a selected tanning factory, meat processing plant, and poultry processing plant in the Phrakanong Klong area of eastern Bangkok were collected and analyzed for physical and chemical characteristics during the months of July to September 1965, at two week intervals. On waste sampling days, samples of receiving klong water were taken at three points, two immediately upstream from the points of discharge of the wastes and one downstream, and analyzed for physical and chemical characteristics in order to evaluate to a degree the pollution effects of these wastes on the klong. The population equivalent of the three industrial wastes, based upon the BOD discharged, was found to be 48,000. Klong Phrakanong was found to be highly polluted both upstream and downstream from the industrial waste outfalls. Although dissolved oxygen was present occasionally, it was zero throughout the major portion of the studies. The level of water and direction of flow of Klong Phrakanong varied according to the tides. Dilution from the Chao Phya River during flood tide substantially reduced the concentration of pollutions, which increased again on the outgoing tide. Although the over-all effects of the industrial wastes were to overload seriously an already grossly polluted Bangkok klong, the water velocities and changes of water brought about by tidal action prevented the septic and foul conditions normally associated with such a degree of pollution. |
