AbstractThis study presents an evaluation of the suitability of 4 x 4 x 12-in. prism as a preferred test-piece for testing the properties of concrete with ^-in. maximum size aggregate over the standard 4-in. cube or 6-4’ x 12-in. cylinder. The entire investigation was divided into 3 phases, namely: (a) Phase I in which the desired height of the prism was established to be 12 inches on the basis of the prism giving a truer uniaxial compressive strength and satisfying ASTM requirements on the dimensions of beam specimens. (b) Phase II deals on the correlation of the compressive strength of the prisms to that of the cubes and cylinders. It was found out that the compressive strength of prisms and cylinders are equal for all practical purposes regardless of the concrete strength. However, the ratio of the prism compressive strength to that of the cube decreases with decreasing concrete strength. (c) Phase III presents the relationships between the flexural strength of prisms and the tensile splitting strength of cylinders, cubes and modified cubes. The ratio of the prism flexural strength to the cylinder, cube or modified cube tensile strength may be taken for convenience equal to 2. It was also observed that the tensile strength of modified cubes may be taken equal to the tensile strength of cubes or cylinders. Finally, proposed equations, [Eqs. (3.1) and (3.2)] to relate the compressive strength of the prism to its flexural strength and to the tensile strength of the modified cube are given
