AbstractSixteen prestressed concrete walls with initial concrete prestress ranging from 150 to 1050 psi were tested to destruction to investigate the effects of longitudinal mid-plane prestressing on the elastic behaviour and ultimate strength of thin walls under vertical loads. Four conventionally reinforced concrete walls were also tested for comparison. The walls tested were 3 inches thick, 10 feet high and one foot wide. Under zero-eccentricity of loading, the walls showed insignificant effect of prestressing on the elastic behaviour and slightly decreasing ultimate strength with increasing values of prestress. Walls with 150 psi initial prestress exhibited the most significant improvement in elastic behaviour and ultimate strength under eccentric loading. Test results indicate a limiting value of prestress beyond which the effect of prestressing decreases the overall resistance as compared to conventionally reinforced walls.
