AbstractThis research is an exploratory study on small farmer acceptance of agricultural innovation in rural of Thailand, Emphasis is particularly on the water pump for irrigation purposes. More precisely the present stage of water pump acceptability and applicability on farm level and the important factors which affect the water pump utilization is the objective of study, Moreover, the study aims at providing information for the further introduction of the solar powered pump. The survey was carried out during February to April 1977, in Nong Kayang1 Uthai Thanee, a province in the Northern part of Thailand, Data on existing cropping pattern, irrigation practices on farm level operational cost of water pumping, institutional arrangement related to irrigation on farm, factors affecting the acceptance of water pump utilization and problem encountered in irrigation practice were collected and analyzed. It is found out that the acceptability and applicability of water pump in terms of its performance is high, The cost of water pumping is also high compared to other inputs at the farm level. The acceptability of water pump utilization is obviously affected by the lack of water resources for paddy, The main reason for not using the water pump is economic: initial investment is too high. The main problem facing the farmer in the area of study is the unavailability of water resources, The problems anticipated for the introduction of the solar powered pumps are mainly related to the characteristics of its performances.
