| Abstract | The bond failure mode, ultimate bond strength and crack width of a bamboo reinforced concrete flexural member was studied for both static and repeated loading. The bond pullout test, standard bond beam test, static beam test and fatigue beam test was carried out for this purpose. The predominant factor effecting the ultimate strength of bamboo reinforced concrete flexural member was found to be bond. Bond failure occurred at the load far before its ultimate flexural load, and it was found that even though the initial cracking strength was increased by improving the strength of concrete, the ultimate bond strength seemed to be not effected very much. Also the bond stress at the failure load was found to be 1.1 to 1.2 times the bond s tress at the initial cracking load. Weak bond between concrete and bamboo effected the cracking mode and crack width. Specially this effect was shown to be obtainable through beam test and not through pullout test. This leads to the conclusion that even though conventionally the permissible bamboo s tress is taken as 3000 psi to control the deflection of the member, the crack width is the governing factor of design. Hence, the crack width and bond stress was taken as the major variables for static and repeated loading test. Average curve for crack width (inches) and bond stress (psi)was developed from those tests. Al so for repeated loading the design curves was presented having the variables such as bond stress (psi), crack width (inches) and number of cycles. |
