| Abstract | The dynamic response of a large flexible turbine foundation seated on elastic medium is studied utilizing a discrete parameter model for the soil-structure system. The excitation force in this study is caused by the rotating unbalanced mass of the machine with a frequency dependent amplitude. The investigation of the harmonic vibration of the system shows that at the operating frequency the shear wave velocity of the supporting medium has a negligible effect upon the vertical response of the foundation structure and machine but has a significant effect on the flexural response. The example problem shows only one resonant peak for the vertical vibration and one resonant peak for the coupled horizontal and rocking vibration for the range of shear wave velocity values greater than 500 ft/sec. |
