| Abstract | A comprehensive survey of atmospheric radiation and sky temperatures at Chiang Mai, Ubon, Bangkok, and Songkhla in Thailand has been made using empirical methods. The atmospheric radiation was estimated from the maximum temperatures in the air column near the ground taken at 07.00 h each day during 1969. A comparison has been made between the Swinbank and Idso-Jackson formula for clear sky radiation, and the Angstrom-Asklof and the Bolz methods for the effect of clouds. The Idso-Jackson formula gives slightly higher atmospheric radiation values than the Swinbank formula and the Angstrom-Asklof method gives generally higher results than the Bolz method. The Swinbank formula and the Angstrom-Asklof method were adopted for the study The atmospheric radiation values were divided into even classes and the frequency distributions for each location throughout the year were evaluated._ 2 The most frequent class of atmospheric radiation values was 385-410 wm _2 . The lowest and highest values of atmospheric radiation were 304 Wm at Chiang Mai and 457 Wm-2 at Ubon, with corresponding effective sky temperatures -2.6°c and 26.5°C respectively. The results show that at Chiang Mai, Ubon, and Bangkok, there are fairly good prospects for water cooling and natural air-conditioning. |
