AbstractIn this study, the pore pressure equalization characteristics of cylindrical piezometers were investigated by finite difference numerical technique. The problem is two-dimensional in space, with infinite boundary proximity, and cover large span of time domain. The techniques were developed to economize computer time. Finally, the satisfactory results were obtained consuming only 2-5 minutes for each run. To cover the practical range of cylindrical piezometer used in practice, the solutions were obtained for four piezometers having different l/d ratios, each being in six conditions (six values of control parameter). It was found that the equalization characteristics of cylindrical piezometers follow the same trend as those of spherical piezometer, which are given by theory of GIBSON (1963). It was concluded that the use of Gibson theory is approximately good when a = 2.4 r 0 was employed as the equivalent radius for all l/d ratios. 2 The parameter P = 2nl k r0 /cV was found to be a good representative control parameter for the equalization of cylindrical piezometers. An equalization chart was constructed on basis of this control parameter. The author recommended that the use of this chart will give the consistent interpretations of the equalization test results of cylindrical piezometers .
