AbstractIn the first part of this study, the reliability of the prediction of return period or the risk of failure of the design is discussed. The results are tabulated for different combinations of return period, expected life of the project and the risks of failure. The effective reservoir capacity requirement is calculated by numerical simulation for the draft equal to mean and less than mean for the case of Indus River at Terbela dam site (Pakistan) by generating independent log-normally distributed inputs and dependent inputs (by Thomas Feiring method). The results presented in this study explain how the needed storage capacity is affected for regulating the independent and dependent inputs to produce given simple outputs (draft) equal and less than adjusted mean for given regulated time interval and a comparison between the needed capacity requirement for draft equal to mean or range and capacity requirement for draft less than mean is done. The results are also compared between the preexisting empirical and analytical methods. The relation of maximum capacity requirement to effective storage for draft less than mean for the Indus River is al so investigated and is tabulated against time and drafts. This ratio is also computed for t he independent inflow series with different standard deviations. The maximum capacity requirement is much more than that of needed for draft less then mean . It is felt that continuous attempts by numerical simulation, are needed t o get the reliable results for effective capacity requirement for the draft less than mean and the range should not be considered as an index for the case of season to season and month carryover dams and even sometime for year to year carryover dams .
