| Abstract | The oxidative assimilation process was applied to the treatment of Pepsi-Cola wastewater. The detention time of the pilot plant was set at 4 hours and the sludge recycle ratio at 1/3. When the recycled sludge suspended solid was kept between 10,000 and 12,000 mg/l, it was possible to maintain the suspended solid in the feeding aerator at 4000 mg/l. Under such conditions 95% COD removal efficiency could be achieved. The excess sludge was hydrolyzed. The hydrolysate served as yeast propagation medium. Both Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Torula Utilis were able to grow in this medium. Saccharomyces cerevisiae gave a yield of 0.48 when the COD of the medium was 3000 mg/l and pH 4.5. Torula Utilis gave a yield of 0.6 when COD of the medium was 9000 mg/l and pH 4.5. Both the supernatant from yeast propagation and the hydrolysis residue could serve as nitrogen source for the process. |
