AbstractSettlements at three locations of the Nong Ngoo Hao test embankments were analyzed by one-dimensional settlement method. Two of the points were located along the center line of the embankments where the condition of one-dimensional compression appeared to be more likely to occur. The third location was located along the edge of the embankment. Four consolidation test series were carried out by using different testing conditions and sample sizes. Three different methods of stress analysis, namely; elastic theory without rigid base (Gray's formula), elastic theory with rigid base (Poulos and Burmister's chart) and finite element method were employed. The results of settlement analyses were compared in various ways. The big size test specimen appeared to give the best results while standard consolidation tests always yielded overestimated results. For the location along the edge of the embankment, analyses based on Burmister's and finite element method stresses gave the best estimation of settlement. No conclusions could be made in regard to the ultimate settlement and the magnitude of secondary settlement because of the short time period available for field record.
