| Abstract | This thesis presents the results of an investigation on the undrained shear strength characteristics of Soft Nong Ngoo Hao Clay under controlled stress conditions, which is one the method to simulate actual field conditions for approaching the stability problems. Investigation included the factors affect the undrained shear strength under this test method. It was found that Soft Nong Ngoo Hao Clay is the sensitive clay, undrained shear strength decreases with increasing time to failure, while undrained shear strength decreases a little bit or nearly equal for the different types of load increment, the more number of applications of deviator stress, the decrease in undrained shear strength seems to occur more obviously. For short duration as 10 mins duration UU controlled-stress tests yield higher undrained shear strengths as compared to UU controlled-strain tests, unconfined compression tests and field vane tests, while they were lower as compared to triaxial CU controlled-strain tests and direct shear tests. It should be noted that triaxial controlled-stress method can detect the pore pressure parameter A at low deviator stresses by the application of small load increments at the initial stages of the test. Stability analysis of Nong Ngoo Hao test embankment resulted in unreliable factors of safety for the calculations by using undrained shear strength under controlled-stress conditions at short duration tests. |
