AbstractThis thesis presents the stress strain behaviour and shear strength characteristics of stiff Nang Ngoo Hao Clay and Stiff Rangsit Clay under 3 different applied stress paths, namely undrained stress paths, fully drained stress paths and constant stress ratio stress paths. The samples of the stiff Nang Ngoo Hao Clay were collected from a depth of 17.0 m - 18.0 m depth and Stiff Rangsit Clay were collected from a depth of 9.0 m - 9.5 m. All the tests were carried out in strain controlled apparatus. The pre-shear isotropic consolidation pressure varied from 2.0 to 90.0 lb/in2 (13.8 to 620.4 kN/m2). The results of all the five series of tests carried out by the author were analyzed. Comparisons of the results between CIU and CID compression tests, CIU compression and CIU extension tests, CID compression and CID extension tests on Stiff Nang Ngoo Hao Clay have also been presented. The author also compare stress strain behaviour of stiff, soft and weathered Nang Ngoo Hao Clays in CIU compression tests. Finally, the prediction of shear and volumetric strain are made on Rangsit Stiff Clay in drained tests (with constant cell pressure) and compared with those obtained by experiments.
