AbstractA laboratory scale extended aeration activated sludge process with total sludge recycle using a plate settler in the settling chamber was used in the treatment of soft-drink bottling wastewater. The overall performance of t he system was investigated at different levels of concentration of mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS). Three types of reactor were studied with 60 degree, 5 degree and no plate settler set in the settling chamber. Experiments were run at 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 mg/l initial mixed liquor suspended solids with an approximate organic loading of 0.05 g BOD5 /g MLSS/day. It was found that the reactor with 60° plate settler provided better biochemical treatment efficiency, lower effluent solids concentration, lower fluctuation of COD removal efficiency and effluent solids concentration, higher degree of nitrification, lower value of sludge volume index (SVI) and higher values of endogenous oxygen uptake rate.
