| Abstract | The biological treatment using Torula yeast could remove 80 percent COD of Glatt water and the yeast yield about of 50 percent could be obtained. The growth of yeast required additional inorganic nutrients. Ratios COD/N of 25 and COD/P of 100 were used for supplement of nitrogen and phosphate. The recovered yeast contained about 53 percent protein. It was observed that pH deeply affected the growth of Torula yeast and pH 4 was chosen to prevent bacterial contamination. In batch cultivation the inoculum sizes from 38 mg/l to 262 mg/l were used and had no effect on yeast growth rate but significantly affected the fermentation time. The continuous cultivation was very sensitive to bacterial contamination. The dilution rate of 0.08 h - l to 0.15 h-1 were examined. The system parameters, µm and Ks were 0.176 h-1 and 809 mg/l, respectively. The oxygen demand varied with the dilution rate and the values between 114 mg/g-h to 163 mg/g-h were obtained. |
