AbstractProject planning is one of the most important aspects of project management system to achieve the success of a construction project with set standards of quality and requirements of the client or end users. Also, it is the area that we should try to improve in the construction industry of our country. A systematically developed project plans in schedule, resources, quality, safety, method statement, etc., will largely be a significant factor that helps facilitate implementing the project. In this case study project, Bridge Construction Project on Sittwe - Maungdaw Road in Rakhine State, we have found that some areas of project planning were good and strong enough and some others were still to be improved. Obviously, it is more important in remote area projects that the project management and control should have quite a complete project planning for all the work phase because of their difficulties in access and transportation. There were five constructions of large span bridges in this case study project which were undertaken by the Bridge Construction Special Unit-7 (BCSU-7) of Department of Bridge (DOB) under the guidance of Ministration of Construction (MOC). It was found that construction planning was a challenging activity in the project management and execution of bridge construction projects. All these five bridges were built simultaneously within a single fiscal years and delivered to the public at the same time. Although the project was delivered on time and carried out under allotted budget successfully, there were a lot lessons to be learnt especially in planning in quality, safety and resource management. From a perspective view of strengths and weaknesses of this project and from theoretical point of view of project planning and control area, we can conclude some useful recommendations for future bridge construction projects in order to develop more effectiveness in project planning and to acquire better results in execution as well.
