AbstractThe objective of the present study is to compare adopted/proposed standards and legislation in the area of air, water and noise in some of the Asian countries. Also, the possibility of having a regional ambient and/or emission standard has been explored and the relative merits and demerits of such an approach has been outlined. It has been estimated by means of an emissions inventory that industrial contribution in the area towards air and water quality deterioration in the region is relatively low. However, with the trend in increasing industrialization, this contributor shall have to be brought under rigid control. Hence, standards based on Ring Lemann No:2 have in general been proposed, with specific modifications applicable wherever necessary. Similarly, for the prevention of water quality deterioration, rather than using absolute values, regulations have been proposed to prevent hazardous pollution; and lastly for noise, an approach towards setting standards and legislation has been proposed. A time frame for the implementation of these proposed standards and legislations has also been recommended.
