AbstractThe work described in this thesis was a continuation of work on a small solar powered intermittent ammonia - water absorption refrigerator initiated by EXELL and KORNSAKOO at the Asian Institute of Technology, The unit constructed by Kornsakoo had a 16ft2 flat plate solar collector containing 35lbs of aqua - ammonia, It was modified so that refrigeration was produced, not by the direct evaporation of ammonia from the ammonia receiver, but by evaporation of ammonia in a dry expansion coil with a hand expansion valve fitted between the ammonia receiver and the solar collector where reabsorption took place, A box containing water sur rounding the evaporator coil was used to make ice, 3,5 lbs being obtained after one day's regeneration of ammonia by solar energy, The yield of ammonia during regeneration was improved by reducing the condensation temperature to 86° F with the help of thatching which protected the water bath surrounding the receiver from the sun, Improvements in the design of bull1s eye for observing liquid levels in the system were also made.
