AbstractEffects of free surface on drag characteristics of circular cylinders in finite uniform flow field were experimentally investigated. Four sizes of circular cylinders were tested in a glass-walled variable slope flume. The Reynolds number was kept to be sufficiently high so that the viscous effect was small in comparison with gravity effect. Dimensionless parameters under consideration were; drag coefficient, relative submergence, relative depth and Froude number. The results showed that the maximum drag coefficient occurred at the relative submergence and Froude number of 0.6 and 0.21 respectively. The relative depth had an effect on the drag coefficient only in the range that the relative submergence was significant, and the relative depth when its effect was considered negligible was greater than 8.
