AbstractThe purpose of this study is to consider the interaction between irrigation sector and power sector of a multi-purpose project. The Bhumiphol Reservoir with irrigation and power as its two actual main functions was, therefore, chosen for this study. This reservoir was then operated respectively (i) under two assumed conditions of priority: priority of irrigation sector and priority of power sector, (ii) under different conditions of initial storage, (iii) and according to different operation rule curves for power, which were numerically derived by using minimum monthly inflow sequence and by using sequences of monthly inflows having the same probability of occurrence. Based on the data of water releases at the Bhumiphol Dam, a time distribution pattern of irrigation water demands in dry season at the Chainat Diversion Dam was also established. The obtained results showed that (i) it is reasonable to give the first priority to irrigation sector, (ii) the different conditions of initial storage have a negligible influence on these results, and (iii) in practice, it is more beneficial to use the rule curve for power generation derived from the sequences of monthly inflow having the probability of occurrence of 1/3 or 1/4.
