AbstractThe effects of repeated loading on the stress strain behaviour of soft Bangkok Clay under undrained condition was investigated by using conventional triaxial apparatus under stress controlled conditions. Undisturbed samples were taken from Nang Ngoo Hao at the depth 6.0 "' 6.5 m. All specimens were isotopically consolidated to 48.265 K.N/m2 (7 psi). Three series of tests were subjected to repeated loading and one series was subjected to constant increment loading. A critical stress of repeated loading was found. For deviator stresses below this critical stress a non-failure state was found under repeated cycles of load. However, for deviator stresses above this critical stress level, failure occurred after a number of repeated cycles of loading. Unique relationships are observed both between the shear strain and the pore water pressure and between the stress ratio and the shear strain for all the repeated loading tests. At each deviator stress, the stress ratio increased linearly with number of cycles except for the first 20 cycles of loading. These two findings would enable to incorporate the prediction of shear strain and pore water pressure for repeated loading under undrained conditions. The loading durations during repeated loading was found to have notable effects in the stress-strain behaviour but no notable effects could be observed due to the duration of unloading. Both the shear strain and pore water pressure were found to increase with increase in loading time in the creep tests series.
